Dual Carburetor, COMET, METEOR, VAE 1600 and the pioneering work of a true VW Beetle tuner
There are names in the classic VW scene that are more than just old brochure prints. They represent a time when tuning was still called "frisieren," when performance didn't come from an online configurator, and when a fast Beetle really had to be understood.

One of these names is TDE – Theo Decker Essen. Theo Decker was one of the formative figures in air-cooled VW tuning. While the production Beetle was still on the road with around 30 hp in the 1950s, Decker developed solutions in Essen-Borbeck that turned the simple Volkswagen into much more: more power, more torque, better drivability – and a very unique piece of VW culture.

01 — Who was Theo Decker?
Theo Decker was a trained master locksmith, a native of Essen, and one of the great pioneers of classic VW engine tuning. Gute Fahrt described him in an obituary as a tuning legend and a man who delighted Beetle drivers all over the world. As early as 1958, he founded a tuning workshop called TDE – VW Tuning with his wife Isolde in Essen-Borbeck.

03 — TDE COMET: The 1300 and 1500 grow up
The COMET conversion kit was the heart of the 1300 and 1500 Beetles. It was not a carburetor plug-and-play package, but a system: dual carburetor system, modified cylinder heads, special camshaft with tappets, special ignition distributor, and bypass oil filter with return cooling.

04 — TDE METEOR: The 1600 as a sporty street engine
For the 1600 engines and especially for Beetle models such as 1302, 1302 S, 1303, and 1303 S, the name METEOR became relevant. The conversion kit included, in addition to the dual carburetor system, modified cylinder heads, a reinforced oil pump, a special camshaft, and a bypass oil filter.

05 — TDE VAE 1600: The Important Type Approval Conversion
Particularly relevant for today's search queries is TDE VAE 1600. A publicly accessible TDE certificate shows: VW Type 11 with AD-1.6-l engine, converted to a TDE dual carburetor system with 2 × Solex 34 PCI and TDE wet air filter. The vehicle passed Type I, Type II, and Type III emission tests.

06 — The Technology Behind the TDE Dual Carburetor System
Short intake paths instead of series manifold
The standard Beetle engine operates with a central carburetor and long intake paths. TDE took the classic dual carburetor route: one carburetor per cylinder bank, short aluminum intake pipes directly on the cylinder heads. The enlargement and shortening of the intake paths aimed to achieve better cylinder filling – this is the core of the TDE philosophy.
Solex 34 PCI: The Classic in the TDE System
The most important TDE carburetor system was the combination with 2 × Solex 34 PCI. A Gute-Fahrt comparative test from 1971 describes in detail: main jet 142.5, idle jet g 50, air correction jet 175, air horn 28 mm, constant injection quantity 0.2 ccm per stroke, washable electrostatically charged air filters, and a special centrifugal-regulated ignition distributor.
A TDE system thrives on details – in the workshop, this means:
- Correct carburetor setup and synchronous opening of both carburetors
- Play-free throttle linkage and intact balance pipe
- Matching air filters and clean crankcase ventilation
- Correct ignition distributor and ignition timing
- No false air at the intake manifolds
- Clean jetting suitable for engine, exhaust, and displacement
Ignition: Part of the System, Not an Afterthought
The TDE operating manual specifies replacing the ignition distributor for 1300/1500/1600 Beetles and Ghias. The VAE-1600 expert report mentions a Bosch ignition distributor with centrifugal advance control without a connected vacuum unit, 10° ignition timing before TDC, and 0.4 mm contact gap. Anyone who mechanically installs a TDE system today but ignores the ignition has not understood the system.
07 — TDE in Comparison Test: The 1302 S Becomes Significantly More Lively
A particularly valuable historical document is the Gute-Fahrt comparison test from 1971. Multi-carburetor systems from Oettinger, Riechert, TDE, and Sauer & Sohn were compared on the VW 1302 S.

Historical Context
Moderate on paper – a clear step forward at the time: less inertia, better response, more eagerness to rev, and a Beetle that drove significantly more maturely.
08 — The Hardcore TDE Beetle: 2.0 Liters, 105 HP and Chassis Thinking
However, TDE was not only capable of moderate dual-carburetor conversions. In a 1972 issue of Gute Fahrt, a Decker VW 1302 S with 105 hp was tested – 159.5 km/h, 0–100 km/h in 10.9 seconds.

The chassis concept is particularly important: TDE worked with Bilstein, lowered the car by 3.5 cm at the front and rear, relocated spring perches, used specially tuned Bilstein cartridges, reinforced stabilizers, and harder shock absorbers at the rear axle.

09 — The Late TDE Legacy: 135 HP and the "King of Beetles"
Even many years later, Theo Decker remained associated with extreme Beetle conversions. A late work from 2008 is described with a 2.0-liter boxer engine, Weber dual carburetors, modified cylinder heads, enlarged valves, 135 hp, a top speed of around 185 km/h, and 0–100 km/h in 7.6 seconds.
This shows why TDE still fascinates today: the brand stands not only for historical Solex systems but for the idea of developing a classic Beetle technically very far. For Wagenwerks®, however, this also means: the more extensive the conversion, the more important a complete technical inspection.
10 — TDE Was More Than Carburetors: Exhaust Pipes and Rims
TDE Exhaust Pipes
TDE exhaust pipes with enlarged inner diameter reduced the back pressure from 1,800 mm WS to 1,060 mm WS in the test at the time. Today, such historical statements do not replace a current inspection. Exhaust, tailpipes, noise, engine combination, and registration must always be specifically checked on the vehicle.
Decker TDE/02 Rims
The VdTÜV information sheet "Modifications to Volkswagens" lists the Decker TDE/02 wheel with 5½ JK × 14, bolt circle 4/130, and offset 27 mm. This shows that TDE concerned not only the engine but the entire vehicle concept – including wheels, rims, and offset.
