How Heinz Willibald re-envisioned the air-cooled Volkswagen – and why his conversions are still sought after today

There are names in the classic VW scene that don't just stand for parts. They stand for an attitude. For courage. For workshop knowledge. For nights spent on engines, for dyno runs and for self-developed solutions. Willibald Tuning belongs precisely to this category.

Today, anyone searching for terms like Willibald Type 4, Willibald HWT 2.0, Willibald Beetle Engine, Willibald K-Jetronic report, Type-4 engine in a Beetle, VW Beetle Porsche fan or Willibald report quickly delves deep into the air-cooled scene. Into old brochures, scanned test reports, classified ads, and the memories of people who themselves drove, built, or sought these conversions.

01 — Who was Heinz Willibald?

Heinz Willibald is one of the big names in classic Beetle tuning within the air-cooled VW scene. An obituary from 2010 describes him as a tuning pioneer, a researcher in the field of Beetle tuning, and the originator of the Willibald Tuning brand, known throughout Europe and beyond – with a particular contribution to vintage VW chassis technology and the Type 4 engine in the Beetle.

The historical trail leads to Rutesheim, Leonberger Straße 44. In an old Willibald brochure, Willibald is listed as a manufacturer of Volkswagen/Audi Performance Products. This shows that Willibald was not just a hobbyist's name, but a supplier with his own program, his own parts, and a clear technical orientation.

02 — The Idea: The Beetle shouldn't just be more powerful, but more mature

In the classic VW world, there were many ways to achieve more power: dual carburetor systems for the Type 1 engine, larger pistons and cylinders, Oettinger, OKRASA, TDE, Riechert, or Porsche-related technology. However, Willibald's strongest myth lies with the Type 4 engine in the VW Beetle.

The Type 4 engine brought more substance: a larger casing, different cooling, more displacement reserves, more torque potential. Instead of squeezing more and more out of the small Type 1 casing, a more powerful base engine was put into the Beetle. Technically appealing, but complex: engine mounts, cooling, exhaust, heat exchangers, transmission, clutch, oil temperature, brakes, and registration all had to be resolved.

Willibald's Approach

Not "just put a big engine in and you're done" – but build an entire vehicle concept. That's the difference between a car that's just loud and a car that truly drives.

03 — "The Fist in the Neck" – the legendary Gute Fahrt test 1982

One of the most well-known historical reference points is a 1982 Gute Fahrt report about a Willibald Beetle. It describes a 1303 with an upgraded two-liter Type 4 engine, officially rated at 100 hp, but delivering 106.5 hp on the dynamometer.

Historical Context

For a 1303 that was still clearly recognizable as a Beetle externally, this was a statement in the early 80s. According to the report, Willibald installed the powerful two-liter engine including TÜV approval. The complete engine cost about 10,800 Deutschmarks at the time, the 5-speed gearbox about 4,000 Deutschmarks, and the chassis with tires about 4,300 Deutschmarks.

04 — Why cooling was so important at Willibald

A Type 4 engine in a Beetle is not thermally self-sufficient. The engine is larger, more powerful, and generates more heat. At the same time, the Beetle's rear compartment is not built for this engine architecture. Anyone who only adds power but ignores cooling is not building a vehicle – they are building a problem.

Willibald therefore relied on its own cooling concept: a specially developed axial cooling fan with fan wheel and air distributor, and a front oil cooler in the main flow with an adapter plate.

06 — K-Jetronic, Porsche fans and the 80s variants

In addition to the carbureted concepts, the topic of Willibald K-Jetronic also appears in the scene. Specific vehicles from this era show how different Willibald conversions could be in detail. A documented 1978 VW 1303 Cabriolet is described with:

A "Willibald engine" can look very different in detail. For each vehicle, it must be checked what is actually installed – carburetor or injection, which fan, which oil cooler, which brake, which registration.

07 — Willibald was not just Beetle – the Type 3 as an example

A detailed Type 3 experience report from the scene demonstrates the technical depth. The author had his Type 3 engine completed at Willibald in Rutesheim with a 911 fan wheel and fan housing. The described build included:

  • 103 mm forged pistons with Mahle cylinders
  • 71 mm crankshaft from the 2.0-liter Bus
  • 312° Schrick camshaft
  • 47 mm intake valves, 40 mm salt-filled exhaust valves
  • 44er Weber IDF dual carburetors
  • Porsche 911 alternator, Knecht air filter system
  • Bosch 050 distributor and front oil cooler under the bumper

However, the same report also shows the harsh reality: After the conversions, the author describes problems with standard tires at high speeds and concludes that the chassis, tires, and brakes were not sufficiently matched to the performance potential.

08 — What makes a Willibald conversion so technically special

1. Type 4 base instead of just boring out Type 1

More substance: larger casing, different cooling, more displacement reserves, more torque potential. Historically documented Type 4 variants with displacements up to 2.0 l and power outputs up to 100 hp and above.

2. Own cooling system with a method

Porsche/axial fan and modified air routing solve a real problem. Willibald worked with fans, air distributors, oil cooler systems, and front oil cooler concepts – no compromises.

3. Engine internals with a program

Camshafts 296° to 332°, 94 mm, 100 mm and 103 mm Type 4 concepts, special valves, crankshafts, pistons/cylinders – a dedicated performance program, not random parts.

4. Brakes and chassis as a must

Type 3 brakes, Koni dampers and wide wheel/tire combinations were not an add-on, but a necessary part of the package. No proper vehicle without a matching chassis.

5. Registration as part of the concept

Willibald installed the powerful two-liter engine including TÜV approval. Registration was part of the idea from the start – not a retrospective bonus.

Willibald was not off-the-shelf tuning

Willibald Tuning was not simply "more horsepower in a Beetle." It was a complete package consisting of a Type 4 engine, cooling, oil circuit, mixture preparation, brakes, chassis, wheels, and registration.

The famous 106.5 hp Beetle from the Gute Fahrt test showed what was possible in the early 80s: 1970 cm³, 180 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 8.4 seconds and 176 km/h top speed – in a car that outwardly still clearly belonged to the classic Beetle world.

Today, these vehicles and conversions are rare, sought after, and technically demanding. Precisely for this reason, they do not belong to backyard diagnostics, but in the hands of those who understand classic VW technology.
