Beetle, Karmann Ghia, T1, T2 and T3 CT – what really matters when buying
The VW Type-1 engine is one of the most famous air-cooled boxer engines ever. Built millions of times, installed in countless vehicles – and precisely because of this, more difficult to assess when buying than it appears at first glance.
From the outside, a Type-1 engine often looks good: fresh paint, new seals, clean sheet metal. But what really matters is inside: engine casing, bearing saddles, oil circuit, cylinder heads, crankshaft assembly, camshaft, compression, carburetor, ignition and cooling.

This guide explains what to look for when buying a VW Type-1 engine, which engine codes are important, why dual-port engines are usually the better basis for performance builds – and why the CT block from the T3 is technically particularly interesting.
01 — What is a VW Type-1 engine?
The Type-1 engine is an air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine with a central crankshaft, a bottom-mounted camshaft, pushrods, rocker arms, and horizontally opposed cylinders. It was built in various displacement versions:
1200 ccm – the classic early Beetle engine
1300 ccm – transitional engine of the late 1960s
1500 ccm – more powerful than the 1300cc, a good basis today
1600 ccm – the most common and sought-after production version
CT/CZ in early VW T3 – late Type-1-like design, technically interesting
02 — The most important engine codes at a glance
For air-cooled VWs, the engine code is an important first clue. It indicates what the engine casing was originally supplied as. Important: The engine code is no guarantee of what is currently in the engine. After decades, an AD or AS casing may have long since been converted to 1776, 1915, or 2276 ccm. On a classic Type-1 engine, the engine number is located on the cast alternator stand.

For near-original vehicles, a single-port engine can be absolutely right. Those who want to build a powerful, robust road engine are generally better off with a dual-port basis – especially for 1600, 1776, 1915 ccm, and dual carburetor systems.
04 — The CT engine: The late Type-1 design in the VW T3
The CT engine is a special case and technically more exciting than many think. It was used in the early VW T3: 1584 ccm, i.e., the classic 1600cc displacement with 85.5 mm bore and 69 mm stroke. At the same time, it is not a normal Beetle engine – it has a flat fan design and several constructive peculiarities.

Why the CT block is interesting
With classic Type-1 engines, the oil circuit is a big issue. Many old cases only have an oil strainer. If a later CT case offers constructive advantages in the oil circuit, it can be a very interesting basis for high-quality engine builds. A healthy CT block is not just "a T3 engine" – it is potentially a very good foundation.

06 — Buying a used engine: What needs to be checked at a minimum
A used engine is often the cheapest, but also the riskiest solution. It is hardly possible to tell from the outside whether the basic unit is still healthy. "Ran until removal" is not a reliable quality statement.

07 — "Overhauled" is not a protected term
Many engines are offered as "overhauled". This can mean anything from new gaskets and fresh paint to a complete technical overhaul. Important questions to ask the seller:
- Has the case been measured and line-bored?
- Which crankshaft and camshaft are installed?
- Which bearings were used?
- Which cylinder heads are installed – single-port or dual-port?
- What is the engine's compression ratio?
- Which oil pump is installed?
- Is there a real oil filter / full-flow?
- Has the engine been run on a dynamometer?
- Are there measured values and a warranty?

If these questions cannot be clearly answered, caution is advised. An engine with an unclearly documented overhaul is an unknown risk – no matter how good it looks from the outside.

Buying a Type-1 engine means more than comparing displacement and price
A D-engine suits an original 1200. An AD or AS is a strong foundation for a classic 1600 or 1776 street engine. A good CT block can be particularly interesting for custom builds – as a late, Type-1-like design with technical advantages in the oil circuit.
