For decades, Weber carburetors have been classic performance and tuning components for air-cooled Volkswagens. When correctly selected and precisely tuned, they ensure spontaneous throttle response, clean power delivery, and exactly the mechanical character that many love about a classic VW.
But a famous name on the carburetor cover alone does not make for a smoothly running engine. Wear, deposits, incorrect jets, differing throttle valve positions, unsuitable fuel pressure, or poorly adjusted ignition can cause even a high-quality Weber system to stutter, bog down, or run too rich.

Important for Dual Carburetor Systems
Two individually overhauled carburetors do not yet make for a smoothly running dual carburetor system. Air volume, throttle valve position, throttle linkage, and mixture must be precisely matched on both sides of the engine.
03 — Why On-Vehicle Tuning is So Important
Every engine is different. Displacement, compression, camshaft, cylinder heads, valve sizes, intake tracts, exhaust system, and ignition system all influence which carburetor settings actually work. Even two outwardly identical engines may require different tuning.
Therefore, before the actual carburetor adjustment, we check the technical fundamentals:
- Is the valve clearance correct?
- Is the ignition system working reliably?
- Are the ignition timing and advance suitable for the engine?
- Is the fuel pressure suitable for the Weber system?
- Are the intake manifold, flanges, and vacuum connections sealed?
- Does the throttle linkage operate both carburetors simultaneously and fully?
- Are the compression and mechanical condition of the engine in order?
Only when this foundation is sound can a carburetor system be permanently and cleanly adjusted. Because not every poor engine performance is automatically a carburetor problem.
04 — Synchronization: So Both Sides of the Engine Work Together
With a dual carburetor system, each cylinder bank must receive the correct and as equal an amount of air as possible. Even small deviations can lead to an uneven idle, poor throttle response, and different thermal loads.
During synchronization, we therefore not only adjust the idle. We also check the interplay in the transition and part-load range. The throttle linkage must operate both carburetors simultaneously – without preload, jamming, or differing opening paths.

This is often the cause when an engine seems to run fine at idle, but stutters or accelerates unevenly while driving.
05 — The Right Jetting Instead of Changing Parts by Feel
Idle jet, main jet, air corrector jet, emulsion tube, venturi, and accelerator pump influence different operating ranges. A change in just one area can therefore affect the entire driving behavior.
We tune the jetting to match the specific engine concept. We pay attention to:

06 — Typical Signs of a Poorly Tuned Weber System
An inspection is particularly advisable with the following symptoms:
It's not always the carburetor
- Vacuum leaks at intake flanges
- Faulty ignition system
- Unsuitable fuel pressure
- Poorly adjusted throttle linkage
- Mechanical problems with the engine
- Incorrect valve clearance

07 — Reconditioning with Standards – Not Just Cosmetically Clean
High-quality reconditioning should remove deposits, oxidation, and old residues without damaging delicate functional surfaces, bores, or fits.
Jets and passages must be clear
Sealing surfaces must function perfectly
Threads must be load-bearing
Shafts must not have excessive play
The carburetor must then be reliably adjustable

08 — Weber Carburetors and H-License Plates
Weber carburetor systems have been a classic tuning component for air-cooled Volkswagens for many decades. Whether a specific system is compatible with an H-license plate depends on the design, contemporary relevance, technical execution, registration, and individual assessment.
