What the reduction gear technically achieves, how to recognize damage, and when a conversion makes sense

The reduction gear is one of the most distinctive technical features of the VW T1. Anyone looking under an early bus will immediately spot them: the large housings directly on the rear wheels. They are part of what makes a T1 a T1 – and an area that repeatedly raises questions during purchase, restoration, and technical modifications.
Keep, overhaul, or convert? This question eventually arises for every T1 owner. The answer is not general – it depends on the vehicle's condition, restoration goals, and intended use.
01 — What is a reduction gear and why does the T1 have it?
The wheel reduction gear – often referred to as a "portal axle" in English – is an intermediate gear housing directly on the rear wheel. It transmits the driving force from the axle tube to the wheel hub and provides an additional reduction in speed.
Why did VW use this in the T1? For several reasons:
More ground clearance — The reduction gear allows the drive shaft to be positioned higher than the wheel hub. Ground clearance increases without raising the body.
More torque at the wheel — The additional gearing provides more power at the wheel – ideal for a loaded commercial vehicle with a small engine.
Robust construction — The housing is a stable, self-contained component. Simple in design, easy to repair, and durable with proper maintenance.

02 — How the reduction gear works
The principle is simple: The drive shaft drives a gear in the reduction gear housing. This transmits power to a second, offset gear – which is directly connected to the wheel hub. Due to the offset, the axle tube sits higher than the center of the wheel.
Inside the housing are:
- Two bevel gears or spur gears depending on design and year of manufacture
- Bearings for drive shaft and wheel hub
- Its own oil supply – the reduction gear has its own oil, separate from the axle gear oil
- Shaft seals inside and out
- Mounting bolts to the axle tube
The most common cause of damage
A too low or too old oil level in the reduction gear housing. The reduction gear has its own oil – if this is overlooked, noises, bearing or gear damage will occur sooner or later.
03 — How to recognize a defective reduction gear
Reduction gear damage usually develops gradually. Sudden total failures are rare – usually there are warning signs that one must be aware of.
Typical warning signs
- Humming or howling at the rear, speed-dependent
- Cracking or clunking when starting off
- Noise increases under load
- Oil stains under the rear wheel
- Oil on the inside of the rim
- Play in the wheel hub when shaking it sideways
- Overheating in the area of the reduction gear housing
- Irregular tire wear at the rear
A first important check: inspect the reduction gear oil level. Too little oil, incorrect oil, or old oil are common causes of early damage. If noises occur, the vehicle should be checked promptly – bearing or gear damage quickly worsens under load.
04 — Keep, overhaul, or convert?
Keep
If the condition is right
Reduction gear is sealed, no play, no noises, oil level in order. Maintenance according to plan: oil change, check seals, inspect fastenings.
Best choice for historically accurate restorations and vehicles with a healthy base.
Overhaul
If wear is present
Replace bearings, seals, shaft seals, and possibly gears. The housing itself is often still good. Sensible if the reduction gear makes noise or leaks oil.
Economically and technically correct with early intervention.
Convert
Straight axle or IRS
Conversion to a straight swing axle or IRS. Changes vehicle character, gearing, ride height, and H-plate situation. Requires a clear concept.
Not for original restorations. Only sensible with complete technical planning.
05 — Overhauling the reduction gear: What is involved
Overhauling a reduction gear is not rocket science – but it requires clean execution. The housing must be removed, disassembled, cleaned, measured, and inspected. Then, the findings determine which parts need to be replaced.

06 — Conversion to a straight axle: What it means
In the T1 scene, converting to a straight swing axle without reduction gears is widespread. The bus sits lower, revs faster on the road, looks cleaner. Sounds simple. But it isn't – at least not if you want to do it right.

Important questions before conversion
- Will the H-plate be retained?
- Does the new gearing match the engine?
- Is registration realistically possible?
- Which brakes fit the new axle?
- Which rims and tires are intended?
- Are the camber and toe geometry correct?

Whoever converts the reduction gear fundamentally changes the T1. This can be correct – but it requires a clear concept, clean execution, and complete technical planning. Half-measures are not an option here.
07 — The most important maintenance issue: The oil
The reduction gear has its own oil. This oil is often forgotten during normal vehicle maintenance – engine oil, transmission oil, rear axle oil. This is precisely the most common reason for reduction gear damage.

Filling quantity: approx. 0.1–0.15 liters per side, depending on the design
Oil type: Choose gear oil according to vehicle age and temperature conditions
Oil change interval: at least with every major service
Check oil level: Filler plug and inspection bore are located on the side of the housing
Old sealant on the cover: renew every time it is opened

When changing the oil, always briefly assess the drained oil. Metal shavings, milky white oil (suspected water ingress), or conspicuously black, burnt oil are indications that should not be ignored.
08 — Why the reduction gear is so important for the original T1
The T1 is not an everyday sedan. It is a historic commercial vehicle with a very distinct character – and the reduction gear drive is an essential part of it. Anyone who owns and wants to preserve an original T1 should not prematurely remove the reduction gear.
Especially for vehicles with H-plates, for Westfalia buses, for rare versions, or for historically accurate restorations, the reduction gear is not a "problem" that needs to be solved – it is an original component that should be maintained and preserved.
