Why true VW performance doesn't start with shiny parts

Behind many of the terms that are commonplace in the air-cooled VW scene today lies a history significantly older than today's parts market – a history of people who didn't just sell accessories, but developed, tested, and shaped components over decades.

 

When talking about air-cooled Volkswagens today, familiar terms quickly come to mind: VW Beetle, VW T1, Type 1 engine, dual carburetors, crankshaft, camshaft, lifters, cylinder heads, and case machining. But behind many of these terms lies a history significantly older than today's parts market.

A history of people who didn't just sell accessories, but developed, tested, cast, milled, improved, and shaped components over decades. One of these names is SCAT. And closely associated with it: Tom Lieb.


01 — From the VW Scene to the Performance Industry

In the 1960s, the air-cooled VW world was completely different. The Beetle wasn't just a collector's vehicle. It was an everyday car, a race base, a tinkerer's platform, and an affordable technical foundation for all sorts of things: Dune Buggies, Drag Cars, Off-Road Vehicles, Circuit Racing, Custom Builds, and Fast Street Cars.

SCAT became a household name in the American VW performance world. What seems self-evident to many today – strengthened crankshafts, special connecting rods, performance heads, intake components, engine cases, valve train parts, and complete engine components – all had to be developed back then.

It wasn't about packaging existing parts more attractively. It was about creating technical solutions that simply didn't exist before.

This is particularly crucial for air-cooled VW engines. A Type 1 engine is simple in design – but not indefinitely resilient. When you increase power, you always change the entire system:

  • More displacement means more thermal load
  • Higher RPMs mean greater forces in the valve train
  • Higher compression requires precise tuning
  • More power requires better oil supply, better cooling, and stable rotating components

Many people first look at carburetors, exhaust, or appearance when it comes to air-cooled VW engines. This is understandable – but technically not the starting point. The true foundation lies deeper:

Cylinder heads and compression

Oil supply and engine geometry

SCAT has set standards in precisely these areas over decades. Especially with crankshafts and connecting rods, enormous forces are at play. At higher RPMs, greater stroke, or higher compression, it's no longer sufficient to simply rely on old stock parts.

04 — Performance is No Accident

SCAT became big particularly in the American VW scene: Dune Buggies, Drag Racing, Off-Road, Hot VWs, California Look, and fast street Beetles. This perfectly matches the air-cooled DNA – because the VW Type 1 engine was never just a small production engine. It became a technical playground for generations of enthusiasts.

Many terms that are commonplace in the scene today come precisely from this era:

  • Performance crankshafts and stroker engines

  • Case machining and strengthened connecting rods

The better question is: "What should the engine be capable of later?"
  • A bus needs a different concept than a lightweight Beetle
  • A touring vehicle needs different reserves than a weekend car
  • A long-distance engine needs different priorities than a pure performance engine
  • A T1 with a long gearbox needs torque in the right place
  • A Beetle with a sporty setup can rev more freely – but must remain durable
