Why true VW performance doesn't start with shiny parts
Behind many of the terms that are commonplace in the air-cooled VW scene today lies a history significantly older than today's parts market – a history of people who didn't just sell accessories, but developed, tested, and shaped components over decades.

When talking about air-cooled Volkswagens today, familiar terms quickly come to mind: VW Beetle, VW T1, Type 1 engine, dual carburetors, crankshaft, camshaft, lifters, cylinder heads, and case machining. But behind many of these terms lies a history significantly older than today's parts market.

This is particularly crucial for air-cooled VW engines. A Type 1 engine is simple in design – but not indefinitely resilient. When you increase power, you always change the entire system:
- More displacement means more thermal load
- Higher RPMs mean greater forces in the valve train
- Higher compression requires precise tuning
