With old air-cooled Volkswagens, everyone first looks at the paint, interior, and engine. But if you want to know what a car really is, you have to look underneath the rear. That's where its character lies.

Whether it's a Beetle, Oval Window, T1 Bus, T2, Type 181 Kübel, or Karmann – the rear axle often tells more about a vehicle than any sales description. It determines how the car drives, how it sits, how it feels, and whether it's an original period piece, an honest workhorse, or a customized cruiser.
Swing Axle

Fixed axle tubes from the transmission to the wheel. Wheels swing in an arc. No visible outer joint. Simple, robust, typical VW.
Identification: No outer boots, fixed tubes visible, camber changes significantly with suspension movement.

VW T1 Bus · early Type 181
Large housings directly at the rear wheels. More ground clearance and power at the wheel. The hallmark of the T1.
Identification: Conspicuous reduction gear housings immediately visible on the outside of both wheels.
Trailing Arm / IRS
VW T2 · Beetle 1302/1303 · late models
Independent suspension with joints. Significantly more stable handling, smoother ride, less camber change during compression.
Identification: Boots on the inside and outside of the drive shafts, trailing arms guide the wheel.

Straight Axle · IRS retrofit · Lowering
Many T1s have been converted from reduction gears to straight axle or IRS. Different handling, different stance, different gear ratio.
Identification: Check for reduction gear housings. If not: original or converted?
01 — Swing Axle: The Old VW Way
The swing axle is classic Volkswagen technology. Simple. Robust. Direct. It was standard for years on early Beetles, Oval Windows, many Karmann Ghias, and numerous other air-cooled models.
The principle is simple: Fixed axle tubes run from the transmission to the rear wheels. The wheels do not move straight up and down, but swing in an arc. This is not technically perfect – but it is typical VW.
Anyone who has ever driven an old Beetle with a swing axle knows this feeling. The car works at the back. It's alive. It gives feedback. It's not sterile, not sanitized, not modern. That's exactly what makes it so appealing.

02 — T1 Bus: Swing Axle with Reduction Gears – The Workhorse Among Axles
Things get particularly interesting with the VW T1. Because the early bus doesn't just have a swing axle – it also has reduction gears at the rear wheels. These wheel reduction gears are often also referred to as portal axles. In the scene, everyone knows what is meant: the large housings on the outside of the rear wheels.
Why did VW do this? Quite simply: The bus had to work. It had to carry loads, drive up mountains, transport craftsmen, families, goods, and half a lifetime – with engines that sound more like lawnmowers than commercial vehicles today. The reduction gears provide more power at the wheel and more ground clearance. This made the T1 not fast, but tough.

This axle belongs to the T1 like the split windscreen and the small taillights. Anyone who owns a vehicle with reduction gears should check their oil level regularly – a dry reduction gear is no small problem.
03 — Type 181: Kübel with Bus Genes
The VW Type 181 – often simply called Kübel – is technically a real modular vehicle. Early Type 181s also used reduction gear technology: more ground clearance, robust gearing, simple construction. The Kübel wasn't meant to be elegant. It was meant to work.
Later, trailing arm technology was introduced. This made the handling more modern, smoother, and more roadworthy. Especially with the Type 181, it's always worth looking under the car:

04 — T2 Bus: The Step into the Modern World
Much changed with the VW T2. The trailing arm axle was used at the rear. No more reduction gears like on the T1, no classic swing axle in the old sense. Instead, trailing arms, drive shafts with joints, and significantly more modern handling.
The T2 sits more quietly. It drives more predictably. It's more comfortable on long journeys. Anyone who gets into a good T2 from an original T1 immediately notices: It's still air-cooled, but it's a different generation.

The T1 is more of a tool. The T2 is more of a touring bus. Both have their charm. But they drive completely differently – and that starts exactly under the rear of the car.
05 — Trailing Arm / IRS: More Control, Less Drama
The trailing arm axle – often also called IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) – is the more modern solution in the classic VW range. The rear wheels are guided by trailing arms, and the drive shafts have joints. Camber changes much less drastically during compression than with the swing axle.
The result: more stability, more comfort, better behavior at higher speeds. For the Beetle, this technology is primarily known from the 1302, 1303, and certain automatic or export models.

Better doesn't automatically mean right. For an early Oval Window or an original T1, a modern axle can make technical sense – but it changes the character. And that's exactly what old cars are all about.
06 — Straight Axle, IRS Conversion, and Lowering: When Scene Meets Technology
In the VW scene, rear axle conversions have been a topic for decades. On the T1, conversion from reduction gears to a straight axle is common – the bus sits lower, handles differently on the road, drives more relaxed, and looks visually cleaner. Others go further and convert to IRS.
But every conversion has consequences:
- Different gear ratio and altered driving performance
- Different ground clearance – relevant for H-plate registration (historic vehicle registration)
- Originality and value of the vehicle can change
- Handling changes fundamentally
- Technical approval must be correct

- Poorly done conversion = catastrophe
- Not a show – a real safety issue
- Gear ratio must match
- Check H-plate registration requirements beforehand
- Keep documentation clean

08 — Typical Weaknesses
Old VW technology is robust – but only if you take it seriously.
Swing Axle: Leaking boots, play in bearings, oily brake drums, worn bearings
Reduction Gears (T1): Check seals, bearings, oil level regularly, take noises seriously – a dry reduction gear quickly becomes expensive
Trailing Arm / IRS: Boots, CV joints, bolted connections, bearing bushes – do not ignore knocking, banging, or vibrations
Conversions: Quality of workmanship, fit, documentation, technical approval, H-plate registration
What's better?
That's the wrong question. A swing axle isn't bad just because it's old. A trailing arm axle isn't automatically better just because it's more modern. A T1 with reduction gears isn't slow because VW couldn't do any better – but because it was built for a different purpose.
- An original period piece should be allowed to keep its technology
- A touring vehicle can be sensibly improved
- A custom bus can have a different stance and drive differently
- A restored Oval Window shouldn't be compulsively modernized

The rear axle is more than just technology. It's part of its identity.
The Beetle with a swing axle drives the way an old Beetle should. The T1 with reduction gears openly displays its commercial vehicle DNA. The Type 181 combines simple VW technology with off-road character. The T2 with trailing arms already drives much more maturely. And a cleanly built IRS conversion can turn an old VW into a really good driver.
But in the end, it's not about what's most modern on paper. It's about what suits the car.
Because with an old Volkswagen, it's never just about getting from A to B. It's about how it feels. And that feeling often starts exactly where hardly anyone looks: underneath the rear of the car.
